Sandgate is set to miss out on CommBank’s promise to protect its branches because the pledge covers the regions and stops at Brisbane’s edge.
What CommBank Has Confirmed So Far

CommBank’s branch locator lists the Sandgate branch at 47 Brighton Road, open weekdays from 9:30am to 4pm. The bank has not yet confirmed a closing date or its reasons. The future of the branch ATM and the nearest alternative branch are also unconfirmed.
Bank@Post Remains, But Branch Services Differ
Sandgate would not be left without banking. Australia Post lists Bank@Post for CommBank customers. They can deposit cash and cheques, withdraw cash and check balances at participating post offices. A card is required and limits apply. The service handles everyday cash tasks, not the full range a branch offers.
CommBank extended its regional branch commitment on 1 October 2026. Every regional branch stays open until at least December 2030. The pledge covers regional locations only, and Sandgate sits in metropolitan Brisbane. The bank says its city investment follows where and how customers bank.
The Finance Sector Union is negotiating a new work agreement with CommBank. It says the bank closed or announced 29 metropolitan branches in 2026, as of 1 October. Nationally, the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority reports branches fell 3 per cent in the year to June 2026. Regional areas fell just 1.7 per cent. An analysis of that data counts 97 fewer branches, 72 of them in major cities. None of the figures describe Sandgate itself.
Petition Challenges Closure of Sandgate’s Last Branch

A petition on Sandgate MP Bisma Asif’s website asks CommBank to reverse the decision. Deagon Ward Councillor Jared Cassidy’s newsletter says he and Asif also wrote to the bank’s chief executive. They asked for an urgent meeting.
They say the bank made its choice without consulting the community and gave little notice. In their view, older residents and small businesses will feel the loss most. The newsletter also asks the public to treat branch staff respectfully.
The pair point to CommBank’s profit of about $11 billion last financial year. The bank’s results announcement for the year to 30 June 2026 shows cash profit of $10.982 billion. The figure covers the whole group, not the Sandgate branch.
What In-Person Customers Can Weigh Up
How are people who bank in person meant to adapt? The Reserve Bank’s 2025 survey found cards remain the most common way Australians pay. Cash held steady at about 15 per cent of payments. Cards covered around 60 per cent of payments for people aged 65 and over, against about 80 per cent for ages 18 to 29. No published data shows how many Sandgate customers use the branch.
Residents can read and sign the petition on Asif’s website. Customers with questions about their accounts can ask CommBank directly for the final arrangements.
